Can I own a Chihuahua in Singapore?

Yes, in an HDB flat or private housing. The Chihuahua is on HDB's approved list, and it is the smallest approved breed, so there is no housing barrier, just the one-dog-per-flat rule and an AVS licence we handle for you. A healthy, correctly sized Chihuahua from our AVS licensed pet shop is $4,288–$4,888 all-in, home around week 9. We never sell "teacup". New to the breed? Start with our Chihuahua breed guide.

Published pricing, because guessing games help nobody

Our Chihuahua puppies are $4,288–$4,888 all-in, and all-in means all-in. The chihuahua price includes the vet health check, vaccinations on schedule, deworming, microchip, breed identification papers, a 30-item starter kit worth over $500, free home delivery with playpen setup, a free AVS-certified first training lesson, and your dog licence handled at purchase.

Smooth coat or long coat, apple head or deer head, fawn, cream, black and tan or chocolate, the price does not change. We do not run rare-colour premiums. A blue or a merle Chihuahua costs exactly what any other Chihuahua costs, because charging more for a colour is exactly the kind of marketing this breed suffers from.

A word on cheap Chihuahuas and "teacups". If a listing is unusually cheap, or is selling a dog on how tiny it will stay, be careful. A sick puppy from an unlicensed source can run past $10,000 in vet bills, and undersized "teacup" dogs bring their own costly problems.

A licensed shop cannot compete with smuggled prices, and will not pretend to. What you pay for is a health-checked, vaccinated puppy of a correct size, backed by a shop that still answers your messages in month six. That is what the licence number in our footer means.

The smallest dog on HDB's approved list

Here is the good news most Singapore buyers do not hear first: the Chihuahua is on the HDB approved list, and it is the smallest approved breed there is. If you live in an HDB flat and you want a dog that genuinely fits the space, this is arguably the most sensible choice on four legs.

HDB allows one approved dog per flat, and every dog in Singapore must be licensed with AVS. We handle that licence at purchase. So there is no housing barrier to clear here, no appeal to file, no loophole to worry about. A tiny dog, a small footprint, and a clear yes.

We are Chihuahua.sg, the Chihuahua specialist site of Curious Tails, an AVS licensed pet shop in Balestier. We have placed 25+ Chihuahuas with Singapore families, in both smooth coat and long coat, apple head and deer head, and every one went home with the honest brief: the teacup trap, the dental reality, and the cold sensitivity told before money changed hands.

The Chihuahua is the pocket companion with the outsized heart. It bonds fiercely, usually to one person, thinks it is a much bigger dog than it is, and lives close to two decades. That is a wonderful deal for the right owner and a genuine long-term commitment for everyone.

The teacup truth we lead with

The biggest trap in this breed is a single word: teacup. You will see "teacup chihuahua", "micro" and "pocket" everywhere, usually attached to a higher price. None of them is a real size class, and none is in any breed standard. The Chihuahua Club of America warns against the label directly.

What the word actually describes is an undersized dog, often the runt or one bred deliberately smaller, and that size correlates with hypoglycemia, fragile bones, crowded teeth and a shorter life. We do not sell or market "teacup" Chihuahuas. We place healthy, correctly sized dogs, and we would rather talk you out of the label than take your money for the risk.

The rest of the honesty is quick. A Chihuahua is fragile: it is the wrong dog for a home with a toddler, though gentle older children who understand "careful" are fine. Its temperament is bold and loyal but famously opinionated; socialise it early or you get the yappy, snappy stereotype, and yes, it will bark at the corridor if you let it.

Dental care is non-negotiable because the tiny jaw crowds a full set of teeth. And in Singapore the surprise is that the Chihuahua feels the cold, not the heat: the aircon is the hazard here, so warm bedding and a sweater indoors are real care, not pampering. Every puppy goes home with a proper health screening and the routine spelled out.

How buying from Curious Tails works

Buying from us is deliberately unhurried. Start on WhatsApp at +65 8220 6408, tell us whether you want smooth or long coat, apple or deer head, and what you are hoping for in temperament. If a puppy matches, visit us at 2 Balestier Road #01-701 in Balestier (weekdays 12 to 6pm, weekends 10 to 6pm) and spend real time with it.

There is no deposit pressure and no same-day push. When you decide, we handle everything in one sitting: paperwork, AVS licence, starter kit walkthrough, delivery booking. After the puppy goes home, the free first training lesson lands in week one, our care advice line answers the small panics, and the 5-day bring-back promise exists for the honest case where the match is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Chihuahua cost in Singapore?

Our Chihuahua puppies are $4,288–$4,888 all-in. That covers the vet health check, vaccinations, deworming, microchip, a 30-item starter kit worth over $500, free home delivery with playpen setup, a free AVS-certified first training lesson, and your dog licence handled at purchase. Smooth coat or long coat, apple head or deer head, the price is the same. No add-ons at the door, and no premium for a colour.

Are Chihuahuas allowed in HDB flats?

Yes. The Chihuahua is on the HDB approved list and is the smallest approved breed, which makes it one of the most sensible flat dogs in Singapore. HDB allows one approved dog per flat, and every dog must be licensed with AVS. We re-check the HDB list at each launch and quote the date on our HDB guide.

Should I buy a teacup Chihuahua?

No, and we will not sell you one. "Teacup", "micro" and "pocket" are marketing labels, not a size class or a breed standard. They describe an undersized dog, often the runt, and correlate with dangerous low blood sugar, fragile bones, crowded teeth and a shorter life. Smaller is not premium; it is riskier. We place healthy, correctly sized Chihuahuas only.

What is the difference between an apple head and a deer head Chihuahua?

The apple head is the breed standard: a domed skull, short muzzle, and often a molera (a soft spot on the skull). The deer head has a longer muzzle and a flatter skull; it is non-standard but usually healthy, and it is the one people mix up with a Miniature Pinscher. We place both, and we never treat a deer head as a discount dog.

Do you place both smooth and long coat Chihuahuas?

Yes. Smooth coat (short) and long coat are the same breed, two coat varieties. The long coat needs a little more grooming, not a higher price. Both suit air-conditioned Singapore homes, and both feel the cold, which is the real climate issue for this breed here.

Do Chihuahuas need dental care?

Absolutely, and it is non-negotiable. The tiny Chihuahua jaw crowds a full set of teeth, so dental disease is the single biggest long-term health reality of the breed. Home brushing plus vet dental checks are part of owning one, not an optional extra. Our dental care guide covers the routine that actually works.

How long do Chihuahuas live?

A Chihuahua is one of the longest-lived dogs, commonly reaching the mid-to-high teens with good care. That long lifespan is the headline benefit and an honest responsibility: you are committing to a companion for well over a decade, so the dental care and lean-weight habits you start now pay off for years.

Are you a licensed pet shop?

Yes. Curious Tails holds AVS pet shop licence AS24J00046, verifiable on the AVS public registry. Visit us at 2 Balestier Road #01-701, weekdays 12 to 6pm and weekends 10 to 6pm.
