First get the dog used to your hands near its mouth, then let it lick enzymatic dog toothpaste off your finger, then move to a finger brush or soft dog brush a few teeth at a time. Brush the outer surfaces at the gum line most days, ideally daily, for about thirty seconds. Never use human toothpaste, because its fluoride and xylitol are toxic to dogs.
Why a brushing routine is the whole game
A Chihuahua carries forty-two teeth in one of the smallest jaws in the dog world, so the teeth sit crowded and overlapping with tight gaps that trap food exactly where a brush struggles to reach. That crowding is why a home dental routine matters more for this breed than for almost any other, and why teeth brushing is the single cheapest piece of preventive medicine you will ever buy.
The job of the brush is simple. It removes plaque, the soft sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth every single day, before that plaque mineralises into hard tartar. Once tartar forms, no brush will shift it and only a vet cleaning can. So the whole point of brushing is timing: catch the plaque while it is still soft, most days, at the gum line where gum disease begins.
The hard part is not technique, it is the dog. A Chihuahua is a small, fast, opinionated animal, and a wriggly puppy that has never had a finger near its mouth will treat the first brush like an ambush. The fix is patience and a plan, not force. Build the habit slowly and a Chihuahua learns to sit for its teeth the same way it learns to sit for dinner.
The two-week desensitising plan
Do not start by brushing. Start by making the mouth a normal thing to touch. Spend the first few days simply lifting your Chihuahua’s lip for a second while it sits in your lap, then giving a treat and stopping. You are teaching one lesson only: hands near the mouth mean good things and the whole thing ends quickly.
Around day three or four, introduce the dog toothpaste. Put a small smear on your finger and let the dog lick it off, so the paste becomes a treat in its own right. Dog toothpastes are flavoured like poultry or malt for exactly this reason. Once your Chihuahua actively wants the paste, you have won most of the battle.
By the end of the first week, rub a little paste along the outside of a few teeth with your finger, then build up over the second week to a finger brush or a soft dog brush. Do two or three teeth, praise, and stop long before the dog gets restless. Ending on a good note every time is the entire trick. Rushed to force, most dogs resist for life; taken over two weeks, most accept it for life.

Here is the rule that is never optional: never use human toothpaste. It contains fluoride, which is toxic to dogs if swallowed, and many human pastes contain xylitol, a sweetener that is dangerously poisonous to dogs even in small amounts. Dogs cannot spit, so everything you put in the mouth gets swallowed. Dog paste is formulated to be swallowed safely; human paste is not.
Skip anything hard or abrasive. A stiff human brush can bruise the delicate gums of a small breed, and that soreness teaches the dog to dread the whole routine. Soft bristles, gentle pressure, dog paste. That is the entire kit.

What to do when your dog simply refuses

A vet-approved dental diet uses a special kibble shape and texture that helps scrub the teeth as the dog eats, and a water additive can reduce the bacteria that drive plaque. Dental chews sit in the same category. A genuinely effective chew helps a little, but size it for a small mouth, supervise it so a hard piece cannot fracture a crowded tooth or choke a tiny dog, and treat it as a supplement rather than the plan. No chew, diet or additive removes plaque the way a brush does; they are the second-best options for when the best option is off the table.
