Where do I start with these Chihuahua guides?

Twenty-one guides, five clusters, one rule: the honest version first. Buying? Start with the teacup truth, then price and temperament. Just brought one home? Read hypoglycemia first aid and the first-week guide. Living with one already? Jump to whichever cluster is currently barking, shivering or refusing its toothbrush at you.

How to read this library

Honest version first, always. Pre-purchase? Start with the teacup truth, then price, dental and temperament. Already own a Chihuahua? Jump to whichever cluster is currently barking, shivering or refusing its toothbrush at you.

Teacup & size honesty

Teacup is a marketing word, not a size or a breed standard. These two guides explain why we refuse to sell one, and how size honesty works in the other direction too: keeping a correctly-sized Chihuahua lean.

Training & temperament

The yappy stereotype is made, not born. These guides get ahead of it with early socialisation, a workable answer to barking, and an honest read on Chihuahuas with children.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start if I have not bought a Chihuahua yet?

Read the teacup truth first, because it reframes every listing you will see afterwards. Then the price guide, so you know what an all-in figure should cover, then the temperament guide to check the breed genuinely fits your household. Those three take about twenty minutes and prevent most of the regret we hear about.

Which guide matters most once the puppy is home?

The hypoglycemia first-aid guide, and read it before the puppy arrives rather than during the emergency. A toy-breed puppy can crash its blood sugar quickly, the signs are easy to miss, and the fix is simple if you already know it. After that, the first-week-home guide walks you through night one to day seven.

Are Chihuahuas allowed in HDB flats?

Yes. The Chihuahua is on the HDB approved list and is the smallest breed on it, so there is no housing barrier to clear. HDB allows one approved dog per flat and every dog must be licensed with AVS, which we handle at purchase. The full HDB guide is linked in the core guides above.

Why do so many of these guides mention teeth?

Because the Chihuahua carries a full set of adult teeth in one of the smallest jaws in dogs, so crowding is normal and periodontal disease is the breed’s single biggest long-term health reality. Brushing is not a nice extra for this breed, it is core care, which is why the dental routine sits at the top of the health cluster.

Is the cold really a bigger problem than the heat here?

For this breed, yes. Singapore’s outdoor climate suits a small short-coated dog, but air-conditioned flats do not. A Chihuahua will shiver at a temperature you find pleasant, so warm bedding, a blanket in the aircon room and sometimes a sweater indoors are practical care rather than pampering. The aircon guide covers the details.

Do these guides apply to both smooth and long coat Chihuahuas?

Almost all of them, yes. Smooth and long coat are two varieties of one breed, so health, temperament, training, dental and cost advice is identical. The only real divergence is grooming, which is why the long-coat grooming guide exists as its own page.

How often are these guides updated?

We revise them whenever something material changes: the HDB approved list, AVS licensing rules, our own pricing, or veterinary guidance we rely on. Regulatory claims carry the date we last verified them, so you can see for yourself how fresh the page is rather than taking our word for it.

Do I need to read all twenty-one guides?

No. Pick the cluster that matches your situation. Pre-purchase buyers usually need four or five pages; new owners need the health and training clusters; long-time owners tend to arrive here searching for one specific answer, such as senior care or a stubborn barking habit. The clusters exist so you can skip the rest without missing anything critical.

Who writes these guides?

Nelson and Kim of Curious Tails, the AVS licensed pet shop behind this site, drawing on the 25+ Chihuahuas we have placed with Singapore families. Where a claim is clinical, we point you to your vet rather than pretending a website can replace an examination.

What if my question is not answered here?

WhatsApp us at +65 8220 6408. Guides answer the common pattern; your dog is a specific case. We would rather talk through your flat, your routine and your household than have you guess from a general page, and there is no obligation attached to asking.
